Coded modulation techniques with bit interleaving and iterative processing for impulsive noise channels

    Get PDF
Power line communications (PLC) surfers performance degradation due mainly to impulsive noise interference generated by electrical appliances. This thesis studies coded modulation techniques to improve the spectral efficiency and error performance of PLC. Considered in the first part is the application of bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) in class-A impulsive noise environment. In particular, the optimal soft-output demodulator and its suboptimal version are presented for an additive class-A noise (AWAN) channel so that iterative demodulation and decoding can be performed at the receiver. The effect of signal mapping on the error performance of BICM-ID systems in impulsive noise is then investigated, with both computer simulations and a tight error bound on the asymptotic performance. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis is performed to illustrate the convergence properties of different mappings. The superior performance of BICMID compared to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is also clearly demonstrated.Motivated by the successes of both BICM-ID and OFDM in improving the error performance of communications systems in impulsive noise environment, the second part of this thesis introduces a novel scheme of bit-interleaved coded OFDM with iterative decoding (BI-COFDM-ID) over the class-A impulsive noise channel. Here, an iterative receiver composed of outer and inner iteration loops is first described in detail. Error performance improvements of the proposed iterative receiver with different iteration strategies are presented and discussed. Performance comparisons of BI-COFDM-ID, BICM-ID and iteratively decoded OFDM are made to illustrate the superiority of BI-COFDM-ID. The effect of signal mapping on the error performance of BI-COFDM-ID is also studied

Rapidly growing quantities of e-waste (WEEE) demand the increasing attention of environmental policy all over the world. Developing countries are particularly affected by recycling and disposal activities, which are deemed harmful to health and environment. Holistic or integrated approaches to WEEE policy are required. The paper discusses first recycling technologies for glass from cathode ray tubes (CRT) and printed circuit boards (PCBs) in Vietnam. Thereafter the German approach to WEEE policy is adjusted to allow for an integrated policy. This is then adapted to allow for the recycling of used monitors and computers.Sự gia tăng một cách nhanh chóng số lượng các chất thải từ các thiết bị điện, điện tử (WEEE) đòi hỏi sự tăng cường chú ý tới các chính sách môi trường toàn cầu. Get PDF
Phytoremediation has been intensively studied during the past decade due to its cost-effectiveness and environmental harmonies. Most of the studies on treatment of heavy metal pollution in soil and water by plant species have been done in developed countries but are limited in Vietnam. In this study, we presented some research results of phytoremediation of polluted soils and water with heavy metals that were done by Institute of Environmental Technology for several last years. For treatment of heavy metal pollution in the water, some plants have great ability to accumulate heavy metals such as Vetiveria zizanioides, Phragmites australis, Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Ipomoea aquatica, Nypa fruticans and Enhydra fluctuans. The heavy metal uptake into shoots and roots of 33 indigenous plant species in Thai Nguyen province was also determined. Two species of the plants investigated, Pteris vittata L. and Pityrogramma calomelanos L. were As hyperaccumulators, containing more than 0.1% As in their shoots while Eleusine indica, Cynodon dactylon, Cyperus rotundus and Equisetum ramosissimum accumulated very high Pb (0.15-0.65%) and Zn (0.22-1.56%) concentrations in their roots. Some experiments to clarify the potential of several plants as good candidates for phytoremediation of polluted soil by heavy metals were carried out in our institute. Force reflecting joystick control for applications to bilateral teleoperation in construction machinery

    Get PDF
This paper presents a simple and effective force reflecting joystick controller for applications to bilateral teleoperation in construction machinery. First, this controller is a combination of an advanced force reflecting gain tuner and two local adaptive controllers, master and slave. Second, the force reflecting gain tuner is effectively designed using recursive least square method and fuzzy logics to estimate directly and accurately the environmental characteristics and, consequently, to produce properly a force reflection. Third, the local adaptive controllers are simply designed using fuzzy technique and optimized using a smart leaning mechanism to ensure that the slave follows well any given trajectory while the operator is able to achieve truly physical perception of interactions at the remote site. An experimental master-slave manipulator is setup and real-time control tests are carried out under various environmental conditions to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed controller

Large-scale Vietnamese point-of-interest classification using weak labeling

    Get PDF
Point-of-Interests (POIs) represent geographic location by different categories (e.g., touristic places, amenities, or shops) and play a prominent role in several location-based applications. However, the majority of POIs category labels are crowd-sourced by the community, thus often of low quality. In this paper, we introduce the first annotated dataset for the POIs categorical classification task in Vietnamese. A total of 750,000 POIs are collected from WeMap, a Vietnamese digital map. Large-scale hand-labeling is inherently time-consuming and labor-intensive, thus we have proposed a new approach using weak labeling. As a result, our dataset covers 15 categories with 275,000 weak-labeled POIs for training, and 30,000 gold-standard POIs for testing, making it the largest compared to the existing Vietnamese POIs dataset. We empirically conduct POI categorical classification experiments using a strong baseline (BERT-based fine-tuning) on our dataset and find that our approach shows high efficiency and is applicable on a large scale. The proposed baseline gives an F1 score of 90% on the test dataset, and significantly improves the accuracy of WeMap POI data by a margin of 37% (from 56 to 93%)

Solving Min-Max Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem by Local Search

    Get PDF
Vehicle routing is a class of combinatorial optimization problems in transportation and logistics. Min-max capacitated vehicle routing is a problem of this class in which the length of the longest route must be minimized. This paper investigates local search approach for solving the min-max capacitated vehicle routing problem with different neighborhood structures. We also propose a combined function instead of the objective function itself for controlling the local search. Experimental results on different datasets show the efficiency of our proposed algorithms compared to previous techniques

A novel integrated approach of relevance vector machine optimized by imperialist competitive algorithm for spatial modeling of shallow landslides

    Get PDF
This research aims at proposing a new artificial intelligence approach (namely RVM-ICA) which is based on the Relevance Vector Machine (RVM) and the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) optimization for landslide susceptibility modeling. A Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial database was generated from Lang Son city in Lang Son province (Vietnam). This GIS database includes a landslide inventory map and fourteen landslide conditioning factors. The suitability of these factors for landslide susceptibility modeling in the study area was verified by the Information Gain Ratio (IGR) technique. A landslide susceptibility prediction model based on RVM-ICA and the GIS database was established by training and prediction phases. The predictive capability of the new approach was evaluated by calculations of sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUC). In addition, to assess the applicability of the proposed model, two state-of-the-art soft computing techniques including the support vector machine (SVM) and logistic regression (LR) were used as benchmark methods. The results of this study show that RVM-ICA with AUC = 0.92 achieved a high goodness-of-fit based on both the training and testing datasets. The predictive capability of RVM-ICA outperformed those of SVM with AUC = 0.91 and LR with AUC = 0.87. The experimental results confirm that the newly proposed model is a very promising alternative to assist planners and decision makers in the task of managing landslide prone areas

The impact of productivity on export transitions: revisited evidence from the Vietnamese manufacturing sectors

    Get PDF
The effect of total factor productivity (TFP) on exports particularly interests policy-makers and economists, but empirical evidence is ambiguous. This paper uses the 6-wave panel data in 2010-2015 to investigate the impact of TFP on export transitions at the firm level. We distinguish different types of export transitions, namely start, stop, continuity, fluctuation, and striving, and different phases of export transition. The Generalised Method of Moments (GMM) estimation is applied to control for endogeneity and unobserved time-invariant specific components. The results reveal that (i) the effect of productivity on export (the self-selection hypothesis) is heterogeneous, depending on specific sectors and types and phases of export transitions; (ii) productivity growth does not necessarily result in positive effects on and lead to participation in types and phases of export transitions. Our results also reveal strong evidence of favourable sunk cost in long-run export striving in nearly all sectors, and unlike previous studies, empirical results show a negative effect of sunk cost in some manufacturing sectors. Policy-makers should create dynamic comparative advantages and favourable environments for new exporters, focus the relevant policies on productivity stimulus, and strengthen the likelihood of survival for the domestic firms in the competitive global markets
